Ex-Convict Jailed 2 Years For Stealing

A Grade 1 Area Court at Karu in Abuja on Thursday sentenced an ex-convict, Sylvester Timothy, 25, to two years imprisonment for stealing household appliances.
Timothy, residing at Karu Village, was earlier charged for criminal breach of trust, misappropriation and theft.
The offences are punishable under Sections 314, 309 and 289 of the Penal Code.
The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, sentenced Timothy without an option of fine, citing his past conviction at the same court last January.
The court also ordered Timothy to pay N815, 000 to the nominal complainant.
The Prosecutor, Mr Mahmud Ismaila, had earlier informed court that one Gbenga Ishola of Karu reported Timothy to the Karu Police Station.
He said the complainant employed the ex-convict three months ago as a security guard in his home and entrusted him with the properties in his apartment.
Ismaila told court that when the complainant returned from a journey, he discovered that his house had been broken into and the guard had disappeared.
He said that when Ishola went into his house, he discovered that household items worth over one million naira had been stolen.
“ You, Timothy, dishonestly stole a deep freezer worth N250, 000; one refrigerator worth N 160, 000; one pumping machine worth N 40, 000 and one generator valued at N 125, 000.’’
The prosecutor also named other items stolen by the convict, saying that the stolen items were worth about N 1, 385, 000.
Ismaila said that the ex-convict was traced to a hideout by the police, where some of items worth N570, 000 were recovered.
He noted that all efforts to recover the remaining items from Timothy did not yield any result.
After listening to the charges, the ex-convict pleaded guilty and begged the court for mercy.
