Falconets vs Haiti
The U-20 female national team, the Falconets, will step out against China this afternoon in Lehon, France in their third qualifying group match needing only a draw to progress to the next round.
There are some parallels to be drawn with the Super Eagles at Russia 2018. The Falconets find themselves in the same situation the Super Eagles did at the 2018 World Cup where they need a draw in their last group match to qualify. The Eagles needed a draw with Argentina to qualify for the second round. And for 84 minutes, they had the desired result before Marcos Rojo burst the bubble.
In France, the Falconets played their first game against Germany [a European side just like the Eagles played Croatia] in their all-green outfit and lost 0-1. In the second match against Haiti [newcomers to the world event just like Iceland], they played in the very popular and admired slashed lemon green jersey and won 1-0.
Their third match against China, a country they have never beaten in the World Cup (just like the Eagles faced Argentina – a country they are yet to beat in a World Cup or even draw against). In two previous matches against China, the Nigerian team has conceded four goals and scored none.
The Falconets’ goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, was the outstanding player for the Nigerians in their slim 1-0 win over Haiti and deservedly won the ‘Dare to Shine’ Player of the Match award. It is almost guaranteed she would need another MVP performance on Monday to help her team into the quarterfinals.
After she collected her award, Nnadozie told, “We have the same amount of points as China, so it’s going to be a tough match.”
“It’s the final match in the group stage, so we have to try our best and give everything we have. This is the final fight,” Nnadozie added.
