UNILAG Will Admit Only 8,000 Out Of 32,000 Applicants – VC

University of Lagos, UNILAG

No fewer than 24,000 applicants to the University of Lagos who scored 200 marks and above will still be unable to secure admission in the institution in the 2017/2018 academic session.
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, gave the indication at a forum with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said that although 32,000 applicants to the university scored 200 marks and above in this year’s Unified Tertiary matriculation examination (UTME), Unilag would not admit beyond 8,000.
Bello said that the university insisted that an applicant must also score at least 40 per cent in Unilag’s post-UTME before consideration for admission.
“We know what goes on in our public examinations. That is why we insist on candidates undertaking our post UTME and scoring at least 40 per cent,’’ he said.
According to Bello, who steps down as Unilag’s Vice-Chancellor on Nov. 11, the aim is to promote excellence.
“We admit the best so that we can produce the best,’’ he stated.
He said that the university held 75 inaugural lectures during his five-year tenure in an effort to promote scholarship.
The professor of chemical engineering noted that the university had held a total of 374 inaugural lectures since its existence.
Bello revealed further that the university produced 103 professors in the past five years, representing about 20 per cent of the 292 professors it had produced in its 55 years of existence.
“They just don’t come and get them; the process of becoming a professor in Unilag is very tedious.
“We have peer review from inside and outside and we have interview internally, so that at the end, you know why you are promoted or why you are not,’’ he said.
Bello said that Unilag had to change its curriculum in a bid to sustain academic excellence.
“We are neither a technology university nor a business university; we are comprehensive, except for agriculture.
“The only agriculture we do is marine.’’
He expressed satisfaction at the performance of the university in its new fields of study such as cell biology and genetics.
“When we started them, they were almost nothing.
“Cell biology and genetics, for instance, are the ones that drive the health sector when you talk about working in the sub-cell region, especially in the area of In-Vitro-Fertilisation (IVF).
He also expressed delight at the performance of the university’s creative arts department.
“When we started it, some saw it as laughable. Today, most of our graduates are the ones making money in Nollywood,’’ Bello said.
Bello, the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the university, came into office in 2012, following the death of the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe.
Bello will be succeeded by Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics)

Switzerland To Repatriate $321 Million Stolen By Abacha To Nigeria December

Late Sani Abacha

Nigeria’s Federal Government says negotiations with Switzerland on the repatriation of $321 million stolen by former military leader Sani Abacha has been concluded and that the money would be repatriated to Nigeria in December.
A statement from the Attorney General and Minister of Justice’s office said a memorandum of understanding would be signed in early December and that repatriation of the funds would follow a few weeks later.
Transparency International, a corruption watchdog, has accused Abacha of stealing up to $5 billion of public money during the five years he ran the oil-rich country, from 1993 until he died in 1998.
The statement issued by the Attorney Genenral, Abubakar Malami also said the Federal Government had recovered $85 million in funds from an oil licence deal that had been deposited in Britain.
President Muhammadu Buhari has, since taking office in 2015, sought help from several nations to recover money he said was taken from public coffers.
It is not immediately clear who deposited the money in Britain. The money was frozen at the request of prosecutors as a result of an Italian investigation. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by British authorities.
The investigations into the $1.3 billion sale in 2011 of oil prospecting licence (OPL) 245, which could hold more than 9 billion barrels of oil, have involved Italian, Nigerian and Dutch authorities and two of the world’s largest international oil companies.
It was initially awarded in 1998 to Malabu Oil and Gas before Royal Dutch Shell and Eni were awarded the rights in 2011 for $1.3 billion.
Shell has said it was aware that some of the payments it made to Nigeria for rights to the oilfield would go to Malabu, a company associated with former Nigerian oil minister and convicted money launderer Dan Etete.
“Nigeria had recently recovered the sum of $85 million from the controversial Malabu Restrained Funds from United Kingdom,” the statement said.
Reuters reports that the money is part of funds related to OPL 245 payments that have been frozen in bank accounts around the world.

SkyRadioTV News Update - Policemen Protest Over Non Payment Of Salaries In Kaduna
Hundreds of policemen on Monday staged a peaceful protest over non payment of two months salaries in Kaduna.
Over 700 of the policemen have not been paid their August and September salaries, while more than 5, 000 are being underpaid.
The policemen, cutting across all ranks, gathered in front of the Salaries Office inside the State Police Command Headquarters, said it was not easy operating without salary.
They appealed to the police authority to immediately rectify the problem, to save them from further hardship.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Agyole Abeh, who addressed the protesting policemen, absolved the police authority of blame, attributing the delay in payment to the Federal Ministry of Finance, IPPS office.
He appealed for restraint and advised those affected to channel their grievances through the right channel.
“We are not happy with the situation; but what government is doing is to check ghost workers and bring sanity in the financial system,” Abeh said.

SkyRadioTV Sport News Update - Batshuayi’s Late Goal Gives Chelsea 2-1 Victory Over Atletico.
Batshuayi celebrates his goal
Photo: BBC/Reuters
Michy Batshuayi scored a 94th-minute winner as Chelsea snatched a dramatic victory against Atletico Madrid to maintain their 100% start in Champions League Group C.
Substitute Batshuayi tapped home from close range with the last kick of the game from Marcos Alonso’s cross.
The Blues fell behind to a 40th-minute Antoine Griezmann penalty despite having the better of the first half when David Luiz needlessly pulled the shirt of Lucas Hernandez at a corner.
But Chelsea, who hit the post through Eden Hazard in the opening stages, again impressed after the interval and were rewarded when Alvaro Morata equalised with his fourth goal in five days.
The Spaniard deftly flicked Hazard’s accurate left-wing cross into the far corner for his first Champions League goal for Chelsea.
BBC Sports reports that Batshuayi’s winner came after missed opportunities for Cesc Fabregas and Morata as Chelsea became the first English team to win away to Atletico and condemn them to defeat in their first European game at their new stadium.
It means Chelsea stay top of Group C on six points, two clear of Roma and five ahead of third-placed Atletico.
Super sub Batshuayi seals famous win
With Atletico-bound Diego Costa watching from the stands ahead of his impending move from Chelsea, the club’s two remaining strikers – Batshuayi and Morata – showed that the side still have plenty of fire power to worry Europe’s elite.
Batshuayi’s goal was a brilliantly worked team goal, starting with a free-kick that Chelsea chose not to hit long despite it being late in the game.
The move included nine Chelsea passes as the ball was worked across the pitch before Batshuayi converted for another decisive goal from the bench – with the Belgian having done the same to seal the Premier League title in May against West Brom.
It was the first goal Atletico have conceded at the Wanda Metropolitano since moving from the Vincente Calderon this season and is just the second time Atletico have lost under Diego Simeone in 24 Champions League home games.
SkyRadioTV Sport News Update - Lukaku Scores Brace As United Put Four Goals Past CSKA.
Photo: BBC/Getty Image
Romelu Lukaku scored twice as Manchester United thrashed CSKA Moscow 4-1 to maintain their 100% record in Group A of the Champions League.
The Red Devils had won just one of their previous 10 away games in the competition, but two goals in the opening 18 minutes set up a very comfortable night at the VEB Arena.
Lukaku headed in a cross from Anthony Martial, who went from provider to goalscorer by converting a penalty after Henrikh Mkhitaryan was brought down.
And, in the city in which their third and most recent European Cup triumph came in 2008, United effectively ended the game as a contest on 26 minutes.
Relive Manchester United’s win over CSKA Moscow
Aided by some dreadful defending from the home side, Lukaku slotted in from a couple of yards out – his 10th goal in nine games since joining from Everton in the summer.

Mkhitaryan added the fourth from close range and United could have scored more – Lukaku was twice denied by brilliant stops from Igor Akinfeev, who also thwarted Jesse Lingard from inside the six-yard box.
Speaking after the game, Lukaku said: “I just work hard and will keep on going. The team is doing well but we must improve. I just want to win trophies.”
CSKA did have chances, with the excellent David de Gea twice saving sharply from Alan Dzagoev and tipping over a Fedor Chalov shot.
And Konstantin Kuchaev slid in a well-taken consolation late on to give the boisterous home fans something to cheer.
In the group’s other game, former Norwich striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored a penalty as Basel trounced 10-man Benfica 5-0
SkyRadioTV Sport News Update - PSG Put Thrash Bayern 3-0.
Paris St-Germain outgunned Bayern Munich 3-0 in a heavyweight Champions League showdown to go three points clear at the top of Group B.
Dani Alves fired the hosts into the lead after just 84 seconds following a great run and pass by Neymar.
Alphonse Areola produced a flying save to deny Javi Martinez an equaliser before PSG sealed the points.
BBC Sports reports that Edinson Cavani’s first time shot doubled the lead before Neymar made it 3-0 from close range.
Elsewhere in Group B, Celtic won 3-0 away to Anderlecht and are level on points with Bayern.
PSG the real deal?
The last time PSG played one of Europe’s biggest clubs in the Champions League they were crushed 6-1 by Barcelona at the last-16 stage last season.
PSG boss Unai Emery included six players from that game yet it was new addition Kylian Mbappe who stole the show with an outstanding attacking display which included two assists.
Bayern, five-time European champions, struggled to deal with the teenager’s lightning pace.
SkyRadioTV Sport News Update - Own Goal Gives Barcelona Advantage Over Sporting.

An own goal by former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates was enough to earn Barcelona a Champions League Group B victory away to Sporting Lisbon.
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both wasted excellent chances in the opening 45 minutes.
However, Barca never looked in danger once Coates bundled into his own net while under pressure from Suarez.
Lionel Messi made his 593rd Barcelona appearance – tying him third with Carles Puyol on the club’s all-time list.
Barcelona are top of the group with six points from two games, with Sporting second on three points, BBC Sports reports.
SkyRadioTV Sport News Update - Celtic Put Three Goals Past Anderlecht.
Celtic celebrate their victory
Celtic ended their run of 16 European group games without a win as goals by Leigh Griffiths, Patrick Roberts and Scott Sinclair saw off Anderlecht.
The win moves Celtic level with Bayern Munich in Group B, and establishes a crucial advantage over Anderlecht.
Griffiths’ opener was created by a fine passing move involving Olivier Ntcham and Kieran Tierney.
Kara Mbodji inadvertently deflected Roberts’ shot in after the break then Sinclair crashed in a late third.
The only setback for Celtic was the departure of captain Scott Brown during the second half, the midfielder limping off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.
He could now be a doubt for Scotland’s World Cup qualifying double header against Slovakia and Slovenia, but for Celtic this was their first away shut-out in the Champions League group stage.
Celtic began nervously, and for the opening 25 minutes they couldn’t hold on to the ball, their passing letting them down hugely. From Ntcham to Roberts, they coughed up possession constantly and invited Anderlecht on to them.
The saving grace was that the Belgian side, beleaguered in their domestic league, were nowhere near good enough to take advantage.
Celtic settled when the goal came – and it was a beauty, a study in accurate and clinical football, the polar opposite of what had gone before.
It began with Ntcham, who delivered a gorgeously weighted pass to Tierney, scampering down the left flank. The timing of the pass and the run were exquisite, as was Tierney’s driven cross to Griffiths, who had cleverly peeled away from Olivier Deschacht in the box.
Three touches and one goal. Ruthless. Celtic were up and running. They had a few scares before the break, Sofiane Hanni and Lukasz Teodorczyk both going close for Anderlecht, and just after the restart Hanni again gave Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon an anxious moment.
In the main, though, this was comfortable and it became a joy for the visiting support when Celtic doubled their lead.
The skies above Brussels caved in on the hosts six minutes after the break. Celtic’s second was a calamity for Anderlecht, a series of self-inflicted wounds that added up to a goal.
Leander Dendoncker played a seriously unwise pass across his penalty area to Deschacht who was extraordinarily lax in dealing with it while under pressure from Roberts.

Carlo Ancelotti
Carlo Ancelotti has been sacked as manager of Bayern Munich.
Following Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League defeat by Paris St-Germain, the club’s board decided to dismiss the Italian, who replaced Pep Guardiola at the start of last season.

Bayern are third in the German table, three points behind Borussia Dortmund, with four wins, one draw and one defeat from their first six matches. They next play away to Hertha Berlin on Sunday (14:30 BST).

SkyRadioTV News Update - Melaye: Recall Shifts To Appeal Court As INEC Seeks Substituted Service.
Senator Dino Melaye
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday withdrew its motion seeking a court order to serve the recall petition on Sen. Dino Melaye through substituted means rather than personal service.
Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja, struck out the motion after INEC’s counsel, Mr Yunus Usman (SAN), announced the withdrawal in court.
In striking the motion, Dimgba directed that all issues pertaining to the case should thereafter be taken to the Court of Appeal.
He noted that since Melaye’s appeal against the Sept. 11 judgment of the court had been entered at the Appellate court; all pending applications should be taken there.
The judge added that the application filed by Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West, for a stay of execution of the verdict, should also be taken to the court.
INEC had on September 15, 2017, filed the ex-parte motion seeking substituted service of the recall petition on Melaye.
The motion was filed following the alleged refusal of the embattled senator to accept service of the petition and other accompanying documents as earlier ordered by the court on September 11 2017.
At the resumed hearing, INEC’s counsel had urged the court to hear the ex-parte motion, but Melaye’s counsel, Mr Nkem Okoro, opposed the hearing.
Okoro opposed the motion on the grounds that the court no longer had jurisdiction to hear any application concerning the case since his client’s appeal against the Sept. 11 judgment had been “entered’’ at the Court of Appeal.
INEC’s counsel, in the course of the proceedings, withdrew the motion after the judge raised some questions about the propriety of the ex-parte motion filed after the court had finally disposed of the case by delivering judgment on September 11 2017.
Justice Dimgba had noted that Order 6 of the Federal High Court Rules under which INEC filed the ex-parte motion presupposed that there was a pending case.
The judge explained that the judgment, having been delivered in the case filing an ex-parte motion, was not the appropriate means for enforcement of the judgment.
Usman agreed with the judge and withdrew the motion which was consequently struck out by the judge.
Justice Dimgba had in his judgment delivered on September 11, 2017, dismissed Melaye’s suit challenging the validity of the recall process.
The judge ruled that as a pre-condition for the exercise to commence, the electoral body must serve the senator with the recall petition and accompanying documents, including signatures of the constituents recalling Melaye.
SkyRadioTV News Update - Niger Govt Revokes N70m Gurara Tourist Site Contract.
Gurara Waterfalls
Gurara Waterfalls. By Wolex640 – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0,
The Niger Government has revoked the N70 million contract agreement with Shelter Suit to construct a hotel at Gurara tourist site.
Mr Daniel Kolo, the state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, disclosed this at a press conference in Minna on Thursday.
Kolo said that Gov. Abubakar Bello gave approval for the revocation of the contract at the weekly State Executive Council meeting.
He said that there was no record of a Memorandum of Understanding between the past administration in the state and the company to acquire 1,105 hectares of land to build a hotel at the Gurara tourist site.
According to him, out of the 1,105 hectares of land acquired by the company, it only paid N70 million for 389 hectares to the state government.
“As government, Gurara water fall is meant for the people of state, we can not allow individual or group of people to claim ownership of the site.
“For Shelter Suit to say they want to build, operate and own the land is not acceptable.
“As government, we believe in the system of build, operate and transfer because the land belongs to the state.
“Therefore, we can not allow build, operate and own method,” the commissioner said.
Kolo said that government would meet with Shelter Suit to discuss and pay the money the company had expended as compensation for the land.
He called on investors to come and partner with the state to develop structures at the site to attract more tourists to the state.
The commissioner said that the council also considered the total transfer of Shiroro Hotel to the state government as a result of poor management of the place that had affected patronage.
Koko said that the governor had also ordered an audit of the hotel in view of its interest in acquiring it.
“Government is the largest shareholder of the hotel and we have settled part of the debt that was incurred by government.
“Therefore, since the other shareholders are not willing to invest again in the hotel and make it attractive for patronage, we will meet with them to sell their shares so we will pay them and take full ownership of the hotel,’’ he said.
SkyRadioTV News Update - Pirates Hijack Passenger Boat At Nember-Brass Waterways.

Barely 48 hours after an ambush that killed three passengers on Tuesday, gunmen suspected to be sea pirates on Thursday hijacked another passenger boat along Nembe-Brass waterways.
The pirates trailed the passenger boat after it had dropped its occupants at Brass from Nembe before hijacking the boat.
Community sources who witnessed the incident said the suspected pirates armed with sophisticated weapons shot sporadically into the air before seizing the boat.
The driver of the boat and his crewmen were later dropped off at the creeks by the pirates who took the boat to unknown destination.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Bayelsa Chapter of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Mr Lloyd Sese, said that the activities of pirates on the waterways was making life unbearable.
Sese said that the union had appealed to relevant authorities to come to the aid of commuters on the waterways, saying that the attack on boats has become a frequent affair.
A youth leader from Brass Local Government Area of the state, Mr Robert Desmond, condemned the incessant sea pirate attacks on the Nembe-Brass waterways.
Desmond described the acts as not only senseless but inhuman and wondered why a group of Bayelsa youth should be terrorising their own people.
He urged security personnel to be on alert particularly as the Brass-Nembe people are in dire need of marine security.
He called on them to apprehend the pirates, destroy every network and arsenal they may have in their possession in order to bring respite to the community.
Mr Asinim Butswat, a Deputy Superintendent of Police and Spokesman of Bayelsa Police Command, also confirmed the incident.

Butswat said that the command was intensifying efforts to check criminality and restore security in the area.

SkyRadioTV News Update - Belle Gibson Fined Over Cancer Claims Deception.
Bell Gibson

An Australian court on Thursday ordered a wellness guru, who claimed she had beaten her brain cancer using nothing but natural remedies, to pay 410,000 dollars (320,000 dollars) for misleading consumers.
Melbourne-based blogger Belle Gibson, 25, had claimed she had brain cancer and healed herself with alternative therapies and special nutrition.
However, it was later revealed she never had the disease.
The court established that she had also lied to consumers about donating substantial sums from the sales of her Whole Pantry Smartphone app and book to various charities.
Debbie Mortimer, a federal court judge, said Gibson profited from her false statements and ordered her to pay for five contraventions of Australian consumer law on failing to donate.
The judge said Gibson had been “cavalier about the truth” and “prepared to tell outright lies.”
In one case, Gibson sought to use a young boy with a terminal illness for her own selfish vested interest to garner sympathy for her own asserted brain cancer, her commercial causes and products.
The judge labelled her behaviour “unconscionable.”
The judge refused a request by prosecutors to order Gibson to pay for full-page apology advertisements in newspapers, as most of her conduct took place on social media.
In April, Gibson was ordered to pay 30,000 dollars in prosecution costs after she was found guilty.
However, her whole Pantry website and app have since been taken down.
Mortimer also criticised Gibson’s failure to attend any of the court hearings, saying she had “elected not to take any responsibility for her conduct.”
“She has chosen not to explain her conduct, she has chosen not to apologise for it.
“If there is one theme or pattern which emerges through her conduct, it is her relentless obsession with herself and what best serves her interests,” the judge said.

SkyRadioTV News Update - Israeli President Praises Merkel For ‘Strong Stand’ Against Far-Right.
Angela Merkel, German Chancellor

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has commended German Chancellor Angela Merkel for opposing the Alternative for Germany (AfD) (far-right party) which has prompted concern within Germany’s Jewish community.
“We welcome and appreciate Chancellor Merkel’s strong stand against the AfD and in the struggle against the neo-fascist trend that is raising its head throughout the world,’’ Rivlin said in a conversation with U.S. Jewish leaders.
Some members of the AfD had been accused of anti-Semitism.
The party won 94 seats in the Bundestag on Sunday.
“These anti-Semitic and racist voices have no place, either in Germany or anywhere else,’’ Rivlin said.
In Israel, where memories of the rise of Germany’s Nazi regime in the 1930s are never far away, the AfD’s election results sparked fear among opposition politicians.
Some right-wing Israelis are sympathetic with the AfD’s anti-immigrant stance.
In a telephone conversation with Merkel this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not mention the AfD but condemned anti-Semitism “from the right and left and among Islamic elements.”

SkyRadioTV News Updates - Labour Kicks Against Amendment Of Pension Reform Act.
Nigerian Labor Congress

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday kicked against the proposed amendment of the Pension Reform Act 2014 to exclude some agencies of government from the contributory pension scheme.
Mr Issa Aremu, NEC member of NLC, made this known on Thursday in a statement issued in Kaduna.
Aremu urged stakeholders on pension matters to reject the proposed controversial bill seeking to exclude members of the Nigeria Police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Prison Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
He said the bill is sponsored by Rep. Oluwole Oke and has passed its second reading.
“Pension reform Acts of 2004 and 2014 were outcomes of executive bills, which addressed the delicate interests of the pensioners, government and the economy.
“In principle, a private member bill informed by narrow and vested interest consideration cannot do justice to all.
The labour leader also said that any private member bill, which seeks to erode the gains of the 13-year-old Contributory Pension Scheme in terms of coverage and resource pool is “counterproductive” and should not be encouraged.
Aremu said pensions of the nation’s working men and women in security services are better secured in a national contributory Scheme than the old “unfunded and unsustainable discredited ‘Defined Benefits Scheme’ (DBS).
According to him, until the recent contributory pension reform “all stakeholders bore witness to ugly features of corruption, inefficiency and share looting”.
He added that this characterized the old Defined Benefits Scheme (DBS), adding that to return to the old era would mean bringing back corruption to pension administration through the National Assembly.
Aremu advised the National Assembly against what he called “the pitfalls of frequent self-serving out sourced amendments” of the Pension Act.
He observed that the pension Act has just been amended through executive and all inclusive review two years ago.
The labour leader said with all its globally acknowledged successes, the contributory pension covers only 7 million workers.
Aremu lamented that to ask for exclusion of the security agencies will undermine the scheme with all the attendant negative implications for Nigerian economy just coming out of recession.
He, therefore, called all members of the Assembly to reject the private bill, which will return pensioners to the bad old days of non-payment of pensions.
Aremu urged legislators through their oversight to ensure appropriate budgetary appropriation for the accrued benefits arising from the old unfunded scheme is paid.
He also said that 60 million workforce in both informal and formal sectors and states civil services are covered in the compulsory Contributory pension scheme.

SkyRadioTV News Updates -UN Condemns Deadly Attacks In Borno.
File Photo: Suicide bombers hit University of Maiduguri recently
The Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Edward Kallon, on Tuesday condemned the deadly attacks targeting innocent civilians in Konduga, Banki and Ngala areas of Borno.
Kallon expressed this view in a statement by Biodun Banire, Public Information Officer, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Tuesday in Abuja
He said that four attacks in recent weeks, three of which were carried out by suicide bombers, had claimed the lives of over 45 civilians and injured countless others.
Kallon said that the incidents were indicative of a surge in the brutal violence triggered by a regionalised conflict that is now in its eighth year.
“Civilians are routinely killed in direct and indiscriminate attacks in the north-east of Nigeria.
“This conflict, with all its brutality and horrors, is reaching new lows, with more than 80 children used as human bombs in 2017 alone.
“I call upon all parties to the conflict to respect human life and dignity.
“The latest attack occurred on September 18 in Konduga area, about 28 kilometers southeast of Maiduguri.
“Three suicide bombers consecutively detonated explosive devices strapped to their bodies in Mashemari village, killing 13 and injuring many more,” he said.
According to him, previous attacks in Banki and Ngala targeted camps for internally displaced persons and Nigerian refugees returning home.
He said that these camps hosted thousands of vulnerable women, men and children, who had been forced to flee their homes and now rely on humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs.
“The previous Konduga attack in August targeted a market in the town.
“The frequency of the attacks is on the rise and ‘softer’ targets, such as camps for displaced persons, are being identified by insurgents.
“This is an extremely worrying trend, while the Government of Nigeria has made significant progress in many locations in the north-east, allowing thousands of people to return home, there is more to be done.
“I urge the Government of Nigeria to increase efforts to protect civilians,” he said
He said that the protection of civilians was the focus of the ongoing humanitarian response in the north-east.
Kallon noted with concern that 8.5 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance in the most affected states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa state’s.
“Women, children and men face grave human rights violations and sexual and gender-based violence, including rape.
“Since the start of the conflict in 2009, thousands of people have been killed, thousands of women and girls have been abducted and children have been used as so-called “suicide” bombers,” he said.

SkyRadioTV News Update Lagos, Lawmakers Move On, Remove Name Of Dead Member.
Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa. Agege APC leaders have rejected his candidates

In line with its rules, the Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday removed the identification tag of the late member, Mr Kazeem Alimi, from his seat in the chambers of the House.
The House resume from its nine-week break during which the lawmaker died.
Alimi died on July 18 at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) during a brief illness and was buried on July 19, two weeks after his 50th birthday.
The lawmaker, who represented Eti-Osa I, was the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Community Affairs.
The House dedicated the business of the day to eulogising the late lawmaker as members took their turns.
The assemblymen, who described Alimi as gentle, humble and achiever, commiserated with his family and the constituents.
The Majority Leader, Mr Sanai Agunbiade, moved the motion for the removal of the lawmaker’s tag and was seconded by a member, Mr Victor Akande, the Chairman, House Committee on Central Business District.
Agunbiade declared: “With heavy heart, I move that the name tag of Hon. Alimi be removed from where he sits and be handed over to the Clerk of the House.”
The Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the plenary, noted that the House did all it could to save Alimi’s life.
“We did all we could to save Alimi’s life but we lacked what it takes to bring him back to life. We did our best as humans.
“We remember his good deeds; he was an embodiment of humility. You hardly heard him speak, all you see was smiles as if the smile had been constructed on his face.
“He was loyal, dedicated and dutiful,” he said.
Obasa, who however, promised that the House would support his family members, advised his colleagues to learn from the death of Alimi by being good to others.

SkyRadioTV News Updates - Nigeria’s Statement Delivered By President Muhammadu Buhari At The 72nd UNGA.
President Muhammadu Buhari
On behalf of my country, Nigeria, I congratulate you Mr. President on your election and Mr. Gutteres on his first General Assembly outing as our Secretary-General. I assure you both of my country’s solidarity and cooperation. You will indeed need the cooperation of all member States as we are meeting during extra-ordinarily troubled and dangerous times. Let me also thank former Secretary-General Mr. Ban ki Moon for his service to the United Nations and wish him peaceful retirement.
2. The previous year has witnessed many far-reaching developments. Some of the most significant events include the Iran Nuclear Deal, the Paris Climate Change Agreement and, of grave concern, the North Korean nuclear crisis.
3. I must also commend the UN’s role in helping to settle thousands of innocent civilians caught in the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. In particular, we must collectively thank the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany under the commendable leadership of Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Governments of Italy, Greece and Turkey for assisting hundreds of thousands of refugees.
4. In an exemplary show of solidarity, the international community came together within my own region to assist the countries and communities in the Sahel and the Lake Chad regions to contain the threats posed by Al Qaida and Boko Haram.
5. We thank the Security Council for visiting the countries of the Lake Chad Basin to assess the security situation and humanitarian needs, and for pledging assistance to rebuild lives and livelihoods. Indeed, in Nigeria we are providing relief and humanitarian assistance to millions in internally displaced camps and those afflicted by terrorism, drought, floods and other natural disasters.
6. In the last year, the international community came together to focus on the need for gender equality, youth empowerment, social inclusion, and the promotion of education, creativity and innovation. The frontiers of good governance, democracy including holding free and fair elections, and enthronement of the rule of law are expanding everywhere, especially in Africa.
7. Our faith in democracy remains firm and unshaken. Our regional organisation ECOWAS came together to uphold democratic principles in The Gambia – as we had done previously in Cote D’Ivoire.
8. Through our individual national efforts, state institutions are being strengthened to promote accountability, and to combat corruption and asset recovery. These can only be achieved through the international community cooperating and providing critical assistance and material support. We shall also cooperate in addressing the growing transnational crimes such as forced labour, modern day slavery, human trafficking and cybercrime.
9. These cooperative efforts should be sustained. We must collectively devise strategies and mobilise the required responses to stop fleeing ISIS fighters from mutating and infiltrating into the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, where there are insufficient resources and response capacity is weak.
10. This will require strong UN cooperation with regional organisations, such as the African Union, in conflict prevention and management. The UN should continue to take primary leadership of the maintenance of international peace and security by providing, in a predictable and sustainable manner, adequate funding and other enablers to regional initiatives and peacekeeping operations authorized by the Security Council.
11. New conflicts should not make us lose focus on ongoing unresolved old conflicts. For example, several UN Security Council Resolutions from 1967 on the Middle East crisis remain unimplemented. Meanwhile, the suffering of the Palestinian people and the blockade of Gaza continue.
12. Additionally, we are now confronted by the desperate human rights and humanitarian situations in Yemen and most tragically in the Rakhine State of Myanmar. The Myanmar crisis is very reminiscent of what happened in Bosnia in 1995 and in Rwanda in 1994.
13. The international community cannot remain silent and not condemn the horrendous suffering caused by what, from all indications is a state-backed programme of brutal depopulation of the Rohingya inhabited areas in Myanmar on the bases of ethnicity and religion. We fully endorse the call by the Secretary-General on the Government of Myanmar to order a halt to the ongoing ethnic cleansing and ensure the safe return of the displaced Rohingya to their homes in safety and dignity.
14. In all these crises, the primary victims are the people, the most vulnerable being women and children. That is why the theme of this session: Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet” is most apposite.
15. While the international community grapples to resolve these conflicts, we must be mindful and focus on the widening inequalities within societies, and the gap between the rich and the poor nations. These inequalities and gaps are part of the underlining root causes of competition for resources, frustration and anger leading to spiralling instability.
16. The most pressing threat to international peace and security today is the accelerated nuclear weapons development programme by North Korea. Since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, we have never come so close to the threat of nuclear war as we have now.
17. All necessary pressure and diplomatic efforts must be brought to bear on North Korea to accept peaceful resolution of the crisis. As Hiroshima and Nagasaki painfully remind us, if we fail, the catastrophic and devastating human loss and environmental degradation cannot be imagined.
18. Nigeria proposes a strong UN delegation to urgently engage the North Korean Leader. The delegation, led by the Security Council, should include members from all the regions.
19. The crisis in the Korean peninsula underscores the urgency for all member states, guided by the spirit of enthroning a safer and more peaceful world, to ratify without delay the Treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons, which will be open for signature here tomorrow.
20. I end my remarks by reiterating Nigeria’s abiding commitment to the foundational principles and goals of the United Nations. Since our admission as a member state in 1960, we have always participated in all efforts to bring about global peace, security and development. Nigeria will continue to support the UN in all its efforts, including the attainment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
I thank you

SkyRadioTV News Updates - Ikpeazu Assures Northern Counterparts Of Safety Of Its Citizens.

Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State.

Abia Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu, on Tuesday assured Nigerians that the crisis created by the face-off between security operatives and IPOB in his state was over and assured everyone of safety of lives and property.
The Governor gave the assurance while speaking with State House Correspondents after he briefed the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbbajo, about the crisis in some parts of Abia.
He said that he is in close consultations with the Northern governors who have given assurances of the safety of lives of those residing in their states.
“We are in very close consultations and relationship with our brothers from Northern Nigeria, the governors.
“And they have assured that every part of Nigeria is safe for every Nigerian including Igbos, to continue in their business and their enterprise.
“And I want to announce that the population of Igbos outside the Igbo enclave is about 11.6 million; you don’t play with the lives of 11.6 million people.
“We all have to be careful, the press, the leadership at the state level and at the federal level, everybody.
“I think that we should be guided by rule of law and grow confidence in the Nigerian citizen that under our laws that he (one) is protected everywhere.’’
The governor acknowledged that Nigerians knew that in the past one week the group called IPOB “has been agitating for a separate nation called Biafra and the homestead of the leader of that group happened to be Abia state”.
He said that as expected, when such things happens there was an interface between some members of that group and the military and the theatre was Abia state, adding that the situation was exploited by some people to cause disharmony.
“We are still working on stabilizing and sustaining the fragile peace that we enjoy now.
“But I thank God that he found us worthy instruments with which to continue to keep our country on and we were humbled by the privileges.”
Ikpeazu stated that he had assured some five Northern governors who visited the state of the safety of lives of everybody resident in Abia, whether they were Abia people or not.
“I swore with the Bible to protect lives and property; because I take such oath very seriously, I will continue to protect the lives and property of our brothers and sisters irrespective of where they come from.
“Especially, the main stay of our economy in Abia is trade and commerce and I do not think it will augur well for our economy if we make our kitchen the theater of fracas.
“Native wisdom in my place says that you should not allow fight to ensue from your mother’s kitchen.
“And it is my responsibility also to grow prosperity in my state and that would have led to negative growth,’’ the governor said.
On the call for the dethronement of Kanu’s father from the traditional stool, the governor said he clearly separated Kanu from his father noting that the processes of handling traditional institutions are enshrined in the laws of the land.
“The traditional rulers who are members of his immediate constituency have leadership. They will do the needful at the appropriate time.
“But for me I think there is a clear division between Nnamdi Kanu and his father,’’ he emphasised.
Ikpeazu declined to link the agitation to the alleged failure of leadership in the South East, saying that allegations were supposed to be treated by investigative officers which he was not trying to investigate.
The governor advised that leaders as perception builders should try to say things that were good about the country not things that were bad.
“There are enough reasons to see that under our circumstance, we may not be in El-dorado yet but there are concerted efforts and attempts to make our place a better place.
“I do not see how, as an Igbo man, boxing myself into a smaller geographic entity will help the cause of the most widely travelled people in Nigeria.
“There are Igbos in Sambisa (Forest); what are you expecting of them if I narrow their geography of coverage.
“But agitation, marginalisation and infrastructure deficiencies, these are issues which are germane and they can be discussed, spoken about and addressed.

“But I do not know how in the 21st century taking up arms in my kitchen will grow the prosperity of my people.

SkyRadioTV Sport Update - Messi Scores Four Goals As Barcelona Crush Eibar.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi was in inspirational form as he scored four goals to lead Barcelona to a crushing 6-1 LaLiga win over Eibar on Tuesday, continuing their 100 per cent start to the campaign.
Barca coach Ernesto Valverde was without the injured Ousmane Dembele after the club’s record signing was ruled out for up to four months with a torn hamstring and he opted to rest several regulars such as Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic, but that mattered little as Messi stepped up and produced an irresistible performance.
Barca were actually quite sluggish during the early exchanges, but they soon clicked into gear broke the deadlock, as Messi stylishly converted a penalty 20 minutes in to take his 2017 tally to 40 goals in as many games.
Paulinho, making his first LaLiga start, then answered his critics again just before the break, heading in Barcelona’s second of the contest to add to his winning goal at Getafe on Saturday.
Denis Suarez got Barca’s first at Getafe and he followed Paulinho’s lead in scoring for the second successive game with a smart finish inside the near post early in the second half, just a few moments before Sergi Enrich pulled one back.
But Messi then stepped up, scoring twice in quick succession to blow Eibar away and complete his hat-trick – his second of the season after putting three past Espanyol.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was not done there as he added a sixth three minutes from the end to leave Eibar on the end of a truly emphatic hammering.
Barcelona came out to an expectant Camp Nou crowd donning shirts with “courage Ousmane” emblazoned across the front following Dembele’s injury at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
But the supporters were given cause for concern just three minutes in, when David Junca’s curled pass picked out the run of Enrich in behind Gerard Pique, only for the striker to hit a tame effort at Marc-Andre ter Stegen when one-on-one.
Barca duly punished that miss, as Messi nonchalantly tucked away a spot kick after Alex Galvez clumsily sent the impressive Nelson Semedo tumbling.
Marko Dmitrovic denied Messi nine minutes before the break, palming a stinging 20-yard drive around the post.
But the goalkeeper was helpless from the resulting corner as Paulinho charged into the danger zone and met Denis Suarez’s delivery with an unstoppable header.
Barca looked more impressive after the break and were fully deserving of their third goal.
Paulinho initially did well to release Messi, who dazzled the Eibar defence and got a shot away, with Dmitrovic parrying it straight to Denis Suarez to tuck away.
Enrich pulled one back with a clever cushioned finish from Junca’s cross shortly after in the 57th minute, but all that seemed to do was jolt Barca into life again.
Messi took centre-stage, restoring Barca’s three-goal cushion with a fine placed finish into the bottom-left corner from the edge of the box, following a delightful move which involved Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta.
And he then completed his hat-trick with 27 minutes to go, charging in from the right-hand side of the penalty area and prodding an effort beyond Dmitrovic.
Eibar nearly got a second when Ruben Pena hit the post late on, but Messi soon showed them how it should be done, as he met Aleix Vidal’s cut-back and guided a finish into the far side of the net to wrap up a crushing win.

The Algeria striker fired left-footed into the top corner after substitute Shinji Okazaki had put the Foxes ahead.
That came after Liverpool had dominated a first half in which Philippe Coutinho shone before being replaced.
BBC Sports reports that Okazaki’s arrival sparked the Foxes into life and he latched on to Vicente Iborra’s knock down for the opener.
Summer signings Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Dominic Solanke both missed good opportunities for the visitors, who named a much-changed side.
Elsewhere, Roy Hodgson got his first win as Crystal Palace boss at home to Huddersfield and Bristol City shocked Premier League Stoke.
It took Tottenham 65 minutes to break down a resolute Barnsley at Wembley, while Leeds beat Burnley on penalties at Turf Moor.
Joshua King scored in extra time to send Bournemouth through against Brighton, as Middlesbrough knocked out fellow Championship side Aston Villa and Swansea won at Reading.

Sky Radio Tv News update- Calisthenics: Devotee Commends Aregbesola.
Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State

A sport enthusiast, Mr Yaya Adekunle, has commended Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun for adopting calisthenics sport as a co-curriculum activity for students in more schools across the state.
Adekunle, an official of Development of Social and Grassroots Mobilisation and Guidance unit, Office of the Governor in Osun, made the commendation in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
He observed that the sport was previously limited to some selected public schools that participated in performances and displays in various celebrations and anniversaries.
“The scope of selection of students for this sport has been expanded with the new template, to include all public and private schools.
He said the sport was primarily conceptualised by the government to give a new social orientation to students in the state as part of its educational transformation.
“The introduction of calisthenics to schools’ scheme is not by chance, but an integral part of the total transformation of education in the state targeted at the eventual production of useful future citizens.
“With the new template as approved by the governor, selected public schools as well as interested private schools in the state can participate.
“Participation is voluntary with the parents/guardians of the participating students responsible for their costumes while the state government will be responsible for the training and competitions.
“In addition to trophies, plaques, medals and certificates of participation for the participants, N1 million, N750, 000 and N500, 000 will be given to the first, second and third placed teams respectively at the senatorial level competition in September.
“In November, the first team in each of the senatorial districts in the state will compete for N2 million, N1 million and N750, 000 for first, second and third positions respectively,’’ he said.
Calisthenics are exercises comprising variety of movements such as running, standing, grasping and pushing, among others, often performed rhythmically and generally without equipment or apparatus.
They are, in essence, body-weight training and are intended to increase body strength, fitness, and flexibility through movements such as pulling or pushing oneself up, bending, jumping, or swinging, using only one’s body weight for resistance.

Sky Radio Sport News Update-Rooney Gets Two Years Driving Ban For Drink-Driving.

Wayne Rooney

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has appeared in court and admitted drink-driving.
He was arrested when police stopped a car in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in the early hours on 1 September.
The 31-year-old was banned from driving for two years and ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order.
Rooney was also ordered to pay £170 when he appeared at Stockport Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard Rooney was almost three times the legal limit when he was stopped by police at 02:00 BST.
A breathalyser test showed his alcohol level was 104 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath.
The drink-drive limit in England and Wales is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.
In a statement issued after the hearing, the Everton footballer said: “I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgment in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong.
“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.
“Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service.”
Wearing a blue suit with his hands in his pockets, Rooney walked into the court building accompanied by a small entourage.
Kate Gaskell, prosecuting, said a police officer on patrol was on duty in Altrincham Road, Wilmslow, at 02:10 BST when they noticed the rear tail-light of a Volkswagen Beetle on the left hand side had gone out.
She said the officer intended to follow the vehicle but it pulled over with Rooney seen to be at the wheel with a female in the front passenger seat.
Ms Gaskell said the footballer provided a positive roadside breath test before he was taken to a police station where the reading was confirmed.
The court heard that Rooney currently had three points on his driving licence for a speeding offence on August 24 2016.
Rooney’s legal team had asked District Judge John Temperley to consider not imposing a community order because of his ongoing charitable work.
However, the judge said he was “not convinced” that imposing a large fine “would have the same effect”

Sky Radio Tv Sport Update-Basketball: Stakeholders Urged To Begin Preparations Ahead World Cup.

Basketball stakeholders have commended the silver winning senior national basketball men’s team, D’Tigers, for their performance at the just concluded Senegal-Tunisia 2017 Afrobasket Championship.
The stakeholders in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday called for early preparation of the team towards the World Cup.
NAN reports that Nigeria’s D’Tigers were defeated by host nation, Tunisia, 65 -77 in the final of the championship, which held from Sept. 8 to Sept. 16 in Tunis.
In spite of the loss at the final, Nigeria currently occupies the first position in the FIBA world ranking for African teams.
The team recorded four wins out of the six matches played with the team’s captain, Ike Diogu emerging as the Most Valuable Player award winner for the competition.
Giogu’s team mate, Ikenna Iroegbu, was one of the best players in the tournament along with Mohamed Hadidane(Tunisia), Mourad El Mabrouk (Tunisia) and Gorgui Dieng(Senegal).
The Musa Kida-led Nigeria Basketball Board Federation (NBBF) also were praised for their efforts in the short time of putting the team together.
However, some stakeholders blamed the loss at the final to the drop of 14 players from the victorious 2015 team.
The stakeholders told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that inadequate preparations also affected the performance of the team and called for better preparations ahead of the world cup qualifications.
Femi Adefeso, a sports analyst, told NAN that the team had done well reaching the final but it was obvious in the final that Tunisia was the better prepared team.
“We played very well but fell due to the over dependence on Ike Diogu, the team captain, who was astonishing in the championship.
“Perhaps a few players from the victorious 2015 set could have made a big difference because of their experience but it is indeed a big lesson for future competitions.
“The NBBF board must be conscious of the fact that good preparations can engineer a perfect tournament as it is obvious that Nigeria is not lacking in quality in basketball,’’ Adefesao said.
Also, Adedamilola Adedotun of Bball Nija said that the team did well but were little short of firing power as compared to the Tunisians.
He urged the NBBF to open camp early in preparation for the World Cup qualifiers and ensure that more players are invited in order to select the very best to represent Nigeria.
“The team did well considering it was the first time for most of the players in the African championship; however there is no excuse for failure.
“Going ahead to the World Cup qualifications, there should be early camping in order for players to come and fight for jerseys.
“Overall, I congratulate the players and their coaching crew for their efforts; they did not let the nation down perhaps next edition they will do better,’’ Adedotun said.
Speaking in the same vein, Dapo Ajeniya, a fan of D’Tigers, said that the team was simply unlucky against the Tunisians after putting up a splendid performance against the Senegalese in the semifinals.
“One was hoping that D’Tigers would do what the female senior team, D’Tigress, achieved in Mali when they defeated Senegal in the final to become Africa Queens.
“We should shift our focus to the World cup preparations and hopefully invite more players without any form of bias and sentiments; the best players should represent us,’’ Ajeniya said.
NAN reports that the 2019 World Cup preparations on the FIBA calendar is to begin on Nov. 20

Sky Radio Tv News Update-Cholera: 48 Persons Die In Borno.
FILE PHOTO: Cholera patients
A humanitarian medical organisation, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said about 48 persons have died of cholera since the outbreak of the disease last month in Borno state.
The organisation otherwise called Doctors without Borders said that 2, 627 cases of the disease were recorded by the state ministry of health.
Anna Cilliers, MSF’s Medical Coordinator said that the organisation had scaled up its campaign to contain the cholera outbreak in Maiduguri, Monguno and Dikwa local government areas of the state.
“As new cases of cholera emerged from Monguno, Dikwa and other parts of Maiduguri, MSF continues to scale up its response in the state. Since the start of the outbreak, a total of 2, 627 cholera cases and 48 deaths were reported by the Borno State Ministry of Health. The state capital Maiduguri alone has witnessed 1,425 cases, while 600 cases in Dikwa and 602 cases in Monguno have so far been reported.
“Early diagnosis and treatment is vital to tackle cholera outbreak. As cases of the disease increased in Maiduguri, we rapidly set up a 100-bed capacity Cholera Treatment Centre (CTU) at Dala area of Maiduguri”.
Cilliers disclosed in a statement that since August 16, some 491 patients were admitted and 475 discharged at the centre.
She added that the organisation had also set up another 50-bed capacity CTU centre at the Muna Garage Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in the outskirts of Maiduguri, adding that the centre would be upgraded to 100-bed capacity in the coming days if the conditions warranted it.
The medical coordinator lamented that the disease has begun to spread to other camps in the surrounding area and into the city.
To contain the situation, Cilliers said, MSF operated an Oral Rehydration Point (ORT), where patients could access sugar and salt solution to help them to overcome severe dehydration.
“Patients arriving here in critical condition are taken directly in our ambulances to the cholera treatment centres”.
The statement also quoted Dr Felix Kouassi, another MSF’s Medical Coordinator, as saying that a 110-bed capacity treatment centre was established at Monguno to combat the disease.
Kouassi noted that patients with suspected cholera cases were isolated to curtail the spread of the disease.
“We are worried that the number of beds currently planned may not be enough as cases continue to rise in the town.”
According to him, the organization was working closely in coordination with state ministry of health, World Health Organisation (WHO) and other humanitarian organisations on prevention and treatment of cholera, as well as providing training to health workers.
“Our facilities operate 24 hours basis providing free services. People with symptoms of cholera, acute diarrhoea, loose stools and dehydration should seek treatment immediately.
“We remain alert and through our community health workers continue to monitor the spread of the outbreak and ensure rapid response,” he added.
The state government has commenced a five-day cholera immunisation campaign in the affected communities.
About 900,000 persons were targeted for vaccination against the disease in the exercise while community sensitisation on the environment, sanitation and hygiene has also been conducted to control the disease.

Sky Radio Tv Entertainment update-Photo Of Girl Kevin Hart Cheated With Surfaces.

Kevin Hart
Jennifer Okundia
Popular American comedian Kevin Hart recently broke the internet with a video of his apology to his pregnant wife, Eniko, and children for the wrong decisions he made, insinuating he cheated on his wife and was being blackmailed to pay up to keep it a secret; photo of the lady he allegedly cheated with has surfaced.
Here’s TMZ’s report and screenshots of the lady’s statement;
This is the woman at the center of the Kevin Hart video that triggered a multi-million dollar extortion demand, and the extortionist freely admits money is the end game.
The 4 minute and 47 second video is highly produced, with audio from Kevin on various radio shows as the video rolls.
The video cuts to a bedroom scene where it appears 2 people are having sex on a bed. You can’t see the people in the bed, but afterward you see a naked man walking in the room and it definitely looks like Kevin.
Now here’s what’s shocking … the extortionist who made the video says the point is 2-fold … to expose Kevin and to get money.
“The real reason Kevin Hart orchestrated the Texas Hurricane Relief Fund, this so-called good deed was done to get ahead as he knew this damaging footage was one click away from being exposed as the liar and cheater he is. Kevin Hart was privy to me wanting to expose him as I have made countless attempts to expose this information to various blogs, in an attempt to also get paid.”
Sources connected to Kevin tell TMZ, whatever happened on the video, Kevin’s hurricane relief efforts had nothing to do with the extortion attempt.
During the video you hear Kevin in interviews talking about being young and unfaithful in his first marriage but now that he’s 36 he’s learned to handle things differently, especially since it’s so easy to get caught.
As we reported, the FBI is on the case and have a suspect. It’s unclear if they’re looking at the woman who was with Kevin in the video or whether it’s someone who either secretly recorded the encounter or gained access to the iPhone that captured it.

Sky Radio Tv News Update-72nd UNGA: Bisola To Drum Support For Girls Education.

Bisola Aiyeola

Bisola Aiyeola, first runner-up #BBNaija reality TV show, will be attending the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York as a ONE ambassador.
One Campaign initiative aims to increase the access to and quality of education for girls in Nigeria, with an emphasis on girls in Northern Nigeria.
Bisola, during #BBNaija show, won ONE’s ‘Back to School’ presentation task, where she called on Nigerian lawmakers to prioritise girls’ education.
The housemates were asked to put together a presentation based on the information and statistics about girls’ education in Nigeria from ONE’s Poverty is Sexist policy report.
They highlighted the barriers to girls’ education in Nigeria and presented possible solutions to ensuring every girl in Nigeria completes primary and secondary school, but Bisola’s was particularly compelling.
ONE’s #GirlsCount campaign focuses on the importance of girls’ education, recognising that globally, 130 million girls are out of school, with 51 million of them in Africa.
It also said that at least, 10.5 million of such girls resided in Nigeria alone.
“Because poverty is sexist, it disproportionately affects women and girls.
Nigerian girls’ participation rate in education remains lower than boys’ across all levels of education, particularly at senior secondary level.
In primary school, 31% of Nigerian girls are out of school compared to 27% of boys.
It would be recalled that ONE’s Nigeria Director Serah Makka was very pleased with Bisola coming out tops in the task.
She said: “we are proud to have Bisola; her presentation was very moving as she highlighted the status of girls education.
“ONE looks forward to working with her as we take our Campaign to the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.”
Waka explained that during the UN General Assembly, African leaders including Nigeria would be asked to make education work for every girl by 2030, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4.
Other ambassadors for the ONE #GirlsCount campaign include Omotola Jalade Ekeinde,Nigerian singer Waje and South Africa’s Bonang Matheba.

FILE PHOTO: Northern Governors Forum

Alhaji Kashim Shettima, the Chairman of Northern Governors Forum, has said that Nigeria leaders have a major role to play in engendering peace and stability in the country.
Shettima said this on Monday when members of Forum paid Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia a visit in Government House, Umuahia.
He said that the leaders have moral obligations to see that Nigeria remains a united entity in order to “make the country work”.
He said that the Nigerian constitution allows every Nigerian to reside in any part of the country, as long as they operate within the law.
“We are working assiduously. We are here to talk to the Northern Community in the state because we do not want any mass exodus of Nigerians from one part of the country to the other.
“We are proud of the Igbo nation. They are brothers and sisters and we urge the Igbo leaders to do the same by visiting the Igbo community in the north and talk to them.
“We respect and promote the unity of Nigeria and we are interested in forming an excellent coalition in Nigeria,” he said.
Shettima commended the state government for exhibiting exemplary leadership during the tension which was recently experienced in the state.
Responding, Ikpeazu thanked the Forum for their support, adding that he would continue to “ensure that everyone under my watch and care is safe regardless of ethnic and religious affiliation”.

The governors of Kebbi, Katsina, Plateau and Sokoto were part of the delegation.

Gov. Commends Executive-Judiciary Cooperation

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday said that the harmonious working relationship between the state executive and the judiciary had contributed to the rapid development of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Atilade visited Ambode to officially notify the governor of her impending retirement as the chief judge on Sept. 22.
“The cordial relationship between the judiciary and the executive arm of government has really put Lagos State on the pedestal of prosperity.
“It has been a fantastic relationship with you as the chief judge, especially in the areas of security and judicial sector reforms.
“We have achieved so much together in these areas as there has been peaceful coexistence among residents.
“We have also increased the number of judges and magistrates for effective judicial functions in the last two years of my administration as governor.
“I commend the judiciary under your tenure.
“You have been totally confident and independent in your operations and it has continued to make the state a pacesetter in terms of how the judiciary should operate,’’ Ambode said.
The governor promised to improve welfare packages for retired judges in the state, saying that they could still contribute their experience and expertise to the service of the state.
“I promise that the welfare of retired judges will be improved.
“They can still be called upon to serve the state and continue to contribute their wealth of experience and expertise for the state’s development.
“I appeal for continuity in the judiciary. Reforms in the judicial sector is continuous and the government is committed to boosting the capacity of the state judiciary,’’ he said.
Earlier, Atilade thanked Gov. Ambode for his commitment to improving the operations of the judiciary in the state during her tenure as chief judge.

Tiwa Savage Allegedly Smokes Shisha

Tiwa Savage

Mavin first lady and mother of one, Tiwa Savage has shared photos of herself smoking shisha at a nightclub.
Tiwa uploaded the photos on Instagram Stories.
What is Shisha?
Shisha or also known as sheesha, is a tobacco mixed with molasses or honey that is used for Hookah smoking. Unlike the tobacco in cigars and cigarettes, which contains industrial chemicals and artificial additives, shisha is made of only natural substances and comes in a wide range of flavors.
Shisha is said to have originated from the northwestern provinces of India along the border of Pakistan in Rajasthan and Gujarat. It soon traveled to Iran and the rest of the
Arab world. However, it was Turkey that completed its revolution, where design and tradition took form as part of its cultural characteristic. Since then, shisha has been the standard of smoking in the Middle East.
The health effects & dangers of shisha:
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation (TobReg), contrary to the popular belief, the smoke that comes from a water pipe contains numerous toxicants known to cause lung cancer, heart disease and other diseases. Although it is true that the water does absorb some of the nicotine, still shisha smokers are exposed to a sufficient dose of nicotine to cause addiction. The World Health Organization further revealed that a single session of smoking shisha yields a nicotine intake equivalent to more than one pack of cigarettes. This means that a shisha user can expect the same risk that cigarette smokers are facing.
In the research conducted by the Department of Health and Center for Tobacco Control Research, people who smoke shisha or herbal tobacco can suffer from high carbon monoxide. As with cigarettes, the presence of high levels of carbon monoxide, tar and heavy metals can be carcinogenic or cancer causing in the body. Thus, there is a high risk not only for cigarette smokers but also for shisha smokers to suffer from cancer, particularly of the lips, mouth, tongue, throat and lungs, and also cardiovascular disease.
Other health risks:
Not many shisha users realise that the risk of getting communicable diseases is very high. Shisha smoking may not directly cause it but it is associated with the sharing of water pipes. Getting tuberculosis, herpes and other common illnesses like cold and flu viruses are some of the dangers of shisha which can be another problem.
Helpful methods to quit shisha:
Some people get help through Medication Therapy, which is considered to be very effective. It is very crucial to talk to your physician on the different options of medication since not all smokers are the same. Your physician will figure out which medicine is right and what are the other methods to help you out in quitting shisha.
If you prefer for a more social interaction, Cognitive Behavior Therapy works for you. It involves working with a trained therapist to talk about issues and learn ways of coping with your feelings and breaking your shisha smoking habits. Its focus is on increasing your confidence in the ability to quit shisha.
Another helpful method to quit shisha is through Motivational interviewing. It is a kind of counselling technique to help you explore and resolve uncertainties about changing your behaviour. In this method, it seeks to avoid an aggressive or confrontational approach. It guides you towards choosing to change your behaviour and to encourage self-belief.
Keep a positive attitude:
Joining a support group will give you an opportunity to meet and talk to other people with similar concerns. Aside from your family and friends, these people will give you additional support and you get new ideas.
Set aside a time for things you enjoy most and makes you feel better. It will help you feel relaxed and forget about stress. Remember, stress can trigger the urge to go back smoking shisha.
Take also a time out for prayer, meditation or visualisation. Massage, exercise or any other calming tasks can also help focus your thoughts.
Stay active and give yourself a healthy diet. It gives you more stamina and a steady supply of energy.
There might be a time where you feel hopeless, talk to your physician right away and share your feelings with your family and friends.

At least, 10 Nigerian writers will depart Lagos for Lebanon on Tuesday on an exchange programme, under the Study Abroad In Lebanon (SAIL) project.
The SAIL project is a programme of the Cedars Institute of Lebanon in collaboration with the Wole Soyinka Foundation in Nigeria.
The programme, the second edition in the series will see 10 Nigerian writers depart for Lebanon for an intensive 10-day course with over eight hours of daily contact and interaction with various faculties, guest lecturers and officially certified tourist guides at the Cedars Institute in Lebanon. The programme holds between 14 and 24 September, 2017.
The first edition of the SAIL project was held in August 2016 when five Nigerian students travelled to Lebanon for the exchange programme to broaden their knowledge.
At a news conference on Monday at the Freedom Park, Lagos Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria to officially announce the departure of the 10 writers, Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka said the second edition of the project had an increase in the number of participants, with the hope that a larger number of participants would be expected next year.
He said the number of participants depended on the sponsorship arrangement, while calling on individuals, corporate bodies and governments to key into the project by sponsoring people vetted by the foundation for the exchange programme, as the participants would acquire useful knowledge during the programme.
Facilitator of the SAIL Project, Dr. Habib Jafaar disclosed that 10 Nigerian writers would take part in this year’s programme and would be travelling to Lebanon on Tuesday to engage in a 10-day intensive course programme to be co-taught by three to six faculties with different specialization.

It will focus on the historical foundation of Lebanon as a geopolitical strategic region that sets the stage for the rise of Phoenician civilization and will examine its emergence as a hub of international trade of global significance, among others,” Jafaar said.
According to him, the course would enable students assess and evaluate historical and philosophical concepts both methodologically and critically, as well as enabled students reflect, think and write critically about their own experiences confronting new cultural context, and several others.
He added that the course would introduced students to new concepts and would challenge their conceptions of the region while it would allow students understand some of the major themes of World History from the unique vantage point of Lebanon.
“It will complement lectures with first-hand experiences of UNESCO world heritage sites and other historically significant areas. It will expose students to the culture of dialogue and its implementation within Lebanon society. It will make possible for Nigerian students to interact with Lebanese students and society in various contexts,” Jafaar explained.
Programme Director, Wole Soyinka Foundation, Folake Soyinka said last year, those who went on the exchange programme were students and that this year’s participants would be writers, adding that those who embarked on the programme last year bore testimonies of the usefulness of the programme in broadening their psyche.

Sky News Updates-Prepare To Leave US Now, Trump Tells 800,000 ‘Dreamers
President Trump

The Trump administration is advising beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to “prepare for and arrange their departure from
the United States,” ABC News reported Tuesday.
Talking points distributed to GOP lawmakers and obtained by ABC News say that DACA recipients should use their remaining time in the U.S. to get their affairs in order, after President Trump rescinded the program Tuesday.
“The Department of Homeland Security urges DACA recipients to use the time remaining on their work authorizations to prepare for and arrange their departure from the United States – including proactively seeking travel documentation – or to apply for other immigration benefits for which they may be eligible,” the document says.
Multiple sources confirmed the authenticity of the talking points to ABC News.
Trump has been pushing members of Congress to take legislative action on DACA’s protections before the end of a six-month phase-out period for the program.
“As I’ve said before, we will resolve the DACA issue with heart and compassion – but through the lawful democratic process,” Trump said in a statement, adding: “It is now time for Congress to act!”
Still, the president’s decision to end the program, which shields certain young undocumented immigrants from deportation, spurred widespread criticism and prompted some lawmakers to urge swift legislative action on the matter.
In a Tuesday night tweet, Trump said that if lawmakers were unable to pass a measure addressing DACA’s protections, he would revisit his decision to end the program.

Sky Entertainment News - Shooting Musical Videos Abroad Is Cost Effective – Efa
Efa Iwara

A rap artiste, Efa Iwara, popularly known as “Efa”, says artistes prefer shooting musical videos abroad because it is cost effective and cheaper.
Iware in Lagos said that in Nigeria people tend to be unprofessional in doing their jobs “which is not the case abroad’’.
“There are some sophisticated equipment and modern technologies required for good productions that we do not have in the country and in terms of logistics, it is very terrible here.
“If you schedule a video shoot for 8 a.m., it may not start till 3 p.m. or later because of hold up and other problems.
“If structures and amenities are in place in this country and we have less hold ups, maybe artistes will not go out to do their videos,’’ he said.
Iware said that if the artists were being empowered and if they could get their money’s worth from the works they released, they might be forced to do their shootings in the country.
“They may be able to produce more quality videos because they have the money to go for that.
“If we have videos that are poorly produced and it is showcased, people will not go for them.
“We need to scale up our production to be as good as those produced abroad,’’ he said.
The musician noted that lack of good equipment in the country was one of the challenges facing production of a good video.
“These equipment cost a lot. It is few individuals that own them and they loan it out for just a day or hours because they will need to give it to others too.
He said that the country needed to put the right policy in place and give artistes rebates on the importation of musical equipment.
Iware studied Geography at the University of Ibadan; he is a rapper, an actor, who played with a group known as X-Factor in 2011.
His songs are “Sunmobi-2014’’, “Balling Like Don Jazzy-2014’’, Bottom of the Glass-2015’’, “Brandi-2o015’’, “Obandi’’ and others.

Least of all persons to make scathing remark against the government is the Psquare group which the local content policy of the Federal Government dusted-up from the valley of obscurity.
Where was Peter Okoye or Psquare brand in 1999 when foreign music dominated our airwaves? If not for the government policy which mandated all broadcast stations in Nigeria to pay attention to Nigerian music by playing 95 percent of Nigerian songs every day, would Peter Okoye or Psquare be known to anybody in Nigeria today? Or would they have competed with better American music which dominated our airwaves then?
After the government have used its policy to brush them up from nothing to something; instead of giving opportunity to other people, they are taking Nigerian jobs to foreign countries through the shooting of music videos abroad.
Now that government have intervened to raise great and better entertainers again, Peter Okoye has the gut to insult the entire Federal Government by calling our great leaders ‘Ndi Ala’ which means mad and stupid people. How dare you say that Psquare?
We, therefore, urge the security agencies in the country to arrest Mr Peter Okoye for disrespecting our government and bringing it to a disrepute. If you cannot produce in Nigeria and hire Nigerians, then leave the industry. We must export Nigerian culture to the outside world through our music and videos.”

Fashola Advocates Use Of Quality For Road Signage

Minister of Works Power and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola SAN.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has advocated the use of quality and standard materials in erecting road signs across the country.
Fashola made the call in Abuja on Thursday at the closing ceremony of a four-day meeting of the National Council on Works.
The theme of the 2017 annual meeting was “Adequate Traffic Signage: An Essential Key for Highways Infrastructure, Safety and Comfort”.
“It will not be enough to just simply erect any type of sign in any place or indeed anyhow.
“They must be produced according to specifications and with enduring materials.
“They must be installed to a minimum standard that ensures their durability, endurance and utility for commuters,” he said.
The minister said that the erection of road signage was a sure way of facilitating mobility and implementing the local component of the global urban agenda for the benefit of Nigerians.
He urged the stakeholders to ensure that specifications and standards were followed in the production and mounting of signage.
Fashola said when installed, signage would assist road users in taking some important decisions and identifying their locations at any given time.
“Road signage is important because it indicates to road users how far their journey is, how far they have progressed and how much is left to travel.
“It also shows how far away they are from one village, city, local government or from critical services like hospitals, fuel stations and hotels,” he added.
According to him, helping commuters to navigate the journey is only half of the human benefit of signage and our mobility policy.
He said the other half was the direct economic benefits to those to be paid for producing and painting the signs, fabricating the steel and the labour to be employed in the installation.
Mr Tobi Okechukwu, the Chairman, the House Representatives Committee on Works, said the initiative to erect signage on Nigerian roads was a step in the right direction.
Okechukwu said the involvement of state governments would ensure the unification of signage across the country.
He pledged the commitment of members of the house to support the implementation of the policy through appropriate legislation

I Am Committed To South West Regional Integration — Ambode

Gov. Akinwumi Ambode

Gov. Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State says he is committed to the integration of the South West Zone.
Ambode said this on Thursday in Osogbo when he paid a courtesy call on his Osun counterpart, Rauf Aregbesola.
The governor said it was time for the region to fully exploit its potentials by backing the cause Aregbesola had been championing since the beginning of his administration.
He said the time was right for all well meaning indigenes to cooperate and ensure that the region began to rely on its economic endowments.
“We have a historic duty to join Aregbesola in championing what he has been clamouring for; the integration of the South West.
“I fully commit myself to the integration of the South West because I believe it is the only way the region can fully explore its potentials for the benefit of all.
“I can assure you that the South West has all it takes to stand alone and survive without having to depend on any external means of funding,’’ he said.
Ambode also commended Aregbesola’s developmental projects in the state.
`We are in consonance with what Aregbesola is doing in Osun. I cannot begin to define how Osun has developed under this administration.
“I am particularly amazed by the commitment to developing the state despite the tough economic challenges the state is passing through.
“I want to assure you that Lagos State Government will continue to support Osun till the end with all it can,’’ Ambode said.
In his remarks, Aregbesola said that the call for regional integration of the region must be taken beyond mere rhetoric.
Aregbesola said that all the South West governors must work toward actualizing integration before the end of their current tenure.
“There can be no meaningful development in the South West without the integration of the region.
“It is the only way we can fully take advantage of the comparative competitiveness that exists in our region.
“That is why we commend the efforts of the Lagos State Government on the move for regional integration,’’ Aregbesola said.

U.S. Senator McCain Battles Brain Cancer

John-Mccain- U.S. Senator

John McCain has always lived for the fight. Now he’s facing his toughest battle.
The Arizona Republican senator has often seemed indestructible, despite the best efforts of his Vietnam War jailers, an earlier bout with melanoma and a list of honorable political defeats. And now he has been diagnosed with brain cancer, as CNN reported .
He’s a warrior politician who bears the scars of a lifetime of military and political campaigns and health scares on his body and across his soul. He’s collected more enemies and friends than most men and is a certified national hero.

Eight years ago, McCain, one of the last giants of the Senate, stood before the flag-draped coffin of his friend and sparring partner Sen. Edward Kennedy, who had succumbed to the same disease he is now fighting, and explained their common approach to life.
“Ted and I shared the sentiment that a fight not joined was a fight not enjoyed,” McCain said, recalling roiling arguments with his fellow Senate lion, but also times when they had buried their differences to forge progress for the nation.
McCain has said he’s itching to get back to work after his surgery nearly a week ago and has been working the phones. But he was told not to travel for two weeks. Now, his movements could be curtailed further by treatments that could include chemotherapy and radiation.
Long-term, McCain’s outlook is daunting. His doctors told CNN’s Sanjay Gupta with McCain’s permission that he was suffering from a glioblastoma tumor, an aggressive form of cancer. Kennedy, who was also diagnosed during a bitter Senate showdown over health care, survived for about 15 months after a similar diagnosis.
McCain’s office said in a statement that the Arizona senator appreciates the outpouring of support he had received since going into the hospital.
“He is grateful to the doctors and staff at Mayo Clinic for their outstanding care, and is confident that any future treatment will be effective.”
RELATED: Grief, support pours in after McCain brain cancer diagnosis
One thing is for sure though, McCain will fight — something one of his former opponents pointed out Wednesday night.

@BarackObama on Twitter said ”John McCain is an American hero & one of the bravest fighters I’ve ever known. Cancer doesn’t know what it’s up against. Give it hell, John”
His daughter, Meghan, issued a statement paying tribute to her father when his diagnosis became public.
“He is the toughest person I know. The cruelest enemy could not break him. The aggressions of political life could not bend him … cancer may afflict him in many ways; but it will not make him surrender. Nothing ever has.”
Throughout his military and political career, McCain has been the epitome of his hero President Theodore’s Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena,” whose face is “marred by dust and sweat and blood” and who fails often “daring greatly” unlike timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

Rangers Draw 1-1 With 3SC In Enugu

Rangers football club players

Rangers International Football Club of Enugu on Sunday drew 1-1 with visiting Shooting Stars (3SC) FC of Ibadan in Enugu in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture.
Godwin Aguda gave the hosts the lead in the 29th minute after visiting goalkeeper Charles Tembe committed a blunder during a corner kick by home captain Okey Odita.
Tembe allowed the ball to slip out of his hands and presented a gift to Aguda who rolled the ball into the net.
3SC raised their game after the interval, but were made to wait till the 76th minute when Abu Azeez scored with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.
Speaking after the match, 3SC’s Technical Adviser, Fatai Amoo, said the club’s attention was now on getting good results from their away matches.
“Getting good results in away matches is our priority at the moment and that is why we fought for the three points against Rangers. But we were not lucky to pick more than one point.
“The 1-1 draw was not our target. But the players gave Rangers lots of respect before the interval and after the interval the players lifted their game to get the equalising goal.
“Though Rangers missed lots of chances, but we could have also won the match as the best chance of the game was presented to my player Nonso Nbakwe, which he failed to convert,’’ he said.
Also speaking, captain of the visiting team, Sylvanus Ebiaku said the club needed the three points against Rangers to boost their morale for the remaining matches of the season.
“The three points would have been better. But, as it is in any away match, a point is not all that bad,’’ he said.
The result pushed Rangers down to the 14th position on the league table with 36 points from 28 matches.

Banky W Urges Wizkid, Davido To Stop Fighting

Banky, Wizkid, Tekno and Davido

Banky W, Wizkid’s ex-label Boss, has waded into the feud between Wizkid, Davido and Tekno which also caught MC Galaxy and Cynthia Morgan in its web.
Banky who borrowed words from one of Jay Z’s songs which made it to his 4:44 album which went platinum after one week, advised the artiste to stop feuding and focus on conquering the world.
According to him, it doesn’t matter if one, two or three Nigerian artistes conquer the world. Here’s what he wrote;
“What’s better than one billionaire? Two”
What’s better than one of our Artists conquering the world? Two? Three? 10?? All?? Wish we would all just quit the mud slinging and get back to pushing the movement forward.
When you’re running a race, if you stop to throw stones at every dog that barks, you’ll never reach your destination OR you’ll get there much later than you should. And.. a mud fight may seem like fun, but in the end, everyone just comes out looking like shit.
Food for thought.

D’banj’s “King Don Come” album cover

The artiste also known as the “Koko Master” announced on his Instagram handle that “King Don Come” will hit the markets on Friday July 7, 2017.

“Thank you Lord for your Grace.”
The project is the Kokomaster’s 4th solo studio album since he came into limelight 12 years ago.
The art work for the cover of the new album is designed in a very creative way to interpret the title “King Don Come”.
It was created by Nigerian visual Artist Nduka Abii, popularly known as Duks Arts, and it employed elements from the hit HBO TV series “Game Of Thrones.”
The album art depicts D’ banj as a medieval king sitting on a throne placed against the backdrop of a raging battle.

It portrays all that stands on the battle field, connoting a hard-fought victory that is straight from a legendary ‘story book’.

We Must Take Ownership Of HIV/AIDS Programme – NACA

Dr Sani Aliyu, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), has said that Nigeria must take full sponsorship of its HIV/AIDS programme or risk losing one million of its citizens currently living with the disease before 2022.
Aliyu, who stated this while fielding questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Sunday, said taking ownership of the programme by Nigeria had become imperative in view of the dwindling resources coming from foreign donors for the programme.
According to him, at the moment, almost one million Nigerians are on HIV treatment with only about 60,000 of them being catered for by the Federal Government through “the “Taraba and Abia project’’.
He said about 700,000 HIV positive Nigerians were catered for by the U. S. government while remaining 240,000 people were being treated through funds donated by other global organizations.
He, therefore, warned that, “if our major donors decide to dtop funding HIV/AIDs programme, almost a million Nigerians will come off the treatments.
“”I can tell you as a physician that if those one million people are out of treatment statistically most of them will be dead in the next five years.
“”This is a national security issue. HIV treatment is now affordable and we as a country need to start taking ownership of the programme.
“”As I mentioned to the National Economic Council, there is no programme on earth that is open-ended. No donor agency will come to you and say `’I’m going to look after you forever’, It will never happen.
“”So, eventually sooner or later those funds will dwindle and they will go away. At the moment we have an opportunity; we have an opportunity because in the last few weeks we have just crossed the tipping point for the epidemic.
“”The tipping point for the epidemic is when we have more people going on treatment than we have new infections, which means that the epidemic is on real downward trend and therefore we need to maintain that momentum.’’
Aliyu expressed optimism that the country would be able to achieve the 90-90-90 per cent objective (90 per cent will have HIV; 90 per cent are on treatment and 90 per cent are biologically suppressed) by 2030 “if the momentum is maintained in the next few years.’’
He disclosed that state governments had already agreed to commit between 0.5 per cent to one per cent of their monthly allocation towards HIV/Aids programmes.
He said: “”We are not asking for that money to come to the federal government. No, they keep their money but they commit to investing that money in HIV care in their states so that their health system can be strengthened; so that in the future they will be able to deliver their own HIV programme.
“”By providing those funds we will be able to increase the number of people on treatment by 50 per cent.
“”If we know that we have two million people on treatment by increasing 50 per cent we must have actually saturated the number of people on treatment.
“”And with the HIV epidemic once you have more than 80 per cent of your people living with HIV on treatment and biologically suppressed you don’t need to do anything the epidemic will die out on its own because the infectivity is so low that the efficiency of transmission is interrupted.
“”So, that was our first prayer to the governors and I made the point very clear that most states th₩ are already budgeting the one per cent towards HIV/AIDs but the problem is with the budget release.’’
It would be recalled that the federal government in 2010 signed an agreement with the U.S. government, stipulating that both the federal and the state governments will set aside one per cent of their allocation towards HIV programme in the country.
The Director General said the federal government was conscious of the agreement “but it was time the state governments implement it.
“”HIV will not go away. You just don’t sit down and pretend it is not a problem simply because somebody is paying for treatment for your citizens. You have to sit up and do it yourself.
““I’m happy to say, the state governors agreed to that prayer and we will follow it up with them.’’
Aliyu also said state governments had agreed to remove all fees and charges for anti-natal care for pregnant women living with HIV/AIDs.
“”Nigeria is right at the bottom of the list when it comes to pregnant women with HIV in terms of transmission.
““Thousands of babies are born in Nigeria every month with HIV. On average one in every three babies born in the world is a Nigerian child. We are covering only one out of every three pregnant women with HIV.
“”Countries in the world had sorted out the mother-to-child transmission. It should not be impossible for Nigeria to do so.
“”There are countries that have completely eliminated mother-to-child transmission. There are countries like Australia that have taken-off HIV from their public health lists of emergency.
“”No child should be born with HIV in Nigeria. It is not fair, it is morally wrong, we have the resources to do this. We have only about 160,000 pregnant women estimated to have HIV.’’
He said the cost of treating a pregnant mother with HIV was N50,000 per year per and Nigeria could comfortably afford it.
He called on state governments to include HIV testing and treatment in their State and Community Health Insurance schemes as this would serve as long term solution to HIV/AIDs funding in the country.

“Furthermore, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Ibrahim K. Idris, while reiterating his stand on zero tolerance for corruption, vows to “flush out those tarnishing police image” from the Force. sKY nEWS UPDATE - Lawyers, Activists, Condemn Confinement Of Pedestrians To Black Maria In Lagos

Sky News Correspondent gather that Sanitation offender being taken into the Black Maria. Inset: Government officials addressing residents of Iddo in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area.

Some Lagos lawyers have condemned arrest and detention of erring pedestrians in “Black Maria,” by officers of the Lagos State anti-indiscipline outfit, Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI).
In interviews in Lagos on Saturday, the lawyers urged recognition of and respect for the citizens’ rights to life, personal liberty and movement.
KAI was established in November 2003.
Part of its mission statement is to eradicate environmental nuisance.
It is charged with enforcing environmental laws including ensuring that the state residents use pedestrian bridges to roads where such bridges are provided.
In the discharge of their duties, KAI personnel arrest erring pedestrians and put them in a police van popularly called Black Maria.
These pedestrians, in many cases, are kept in the van without access to legal representation. They eventually pay a fine.
Some Lagos-based lawyers condemned the practice, describing it as infringement on the rights of citizens
Mr Festus Keyamo, also a rights activist, said that the practice was wrong, unconstitutional and barbaric.
According to him, any person accused of an offence should be charged before a competent court to determine whether he is guilty.
He added that that such people should be entitled to adequate time to defend themselves.
“Any person accused of an offence should first be entitled to adequate time and facilities to defend himself.
“Secondly, such a person must be charged before a competent court of law that will determine his guilt or otherwise.
“Thirdly, you cannot be the accuser, the prosecutor, and the judge in any case.
“KAI cannot arrest, try and subsequently convict an individual; it is the worst form of human rights abuse.
“Also, by imposing fines on alleged offenders instead of referring them to a mobile court, KAI simply arrogated to itself, the powers of a trial court,’’ Keyamo said.
He noted that KAI was an agency of the executive arm of the state government not the judiciary.
“I know that Lagos State Government meant well by building those bridges aimed at protecting human lives.
“However, we cannot throw away human rights on the altar of trying to maintain law and order,” he said.
Similarly, Mrs Mandy Asagba, the President of the African Women Lawyers Association of Nigeria (AWLAN), condemned the practice.
Asagba, however, urged that citizens should be properly guided so as not to flout government rules and regulations.
“The innovation by the Lagos State Government is commendable as its purpose is to help to preserve lives.
“However, arresting pedestrians and confining them to a Black Maria constitutes an infringement on their rights.
“To obtain money from these pedestrians also constitutes extortion and corruption.
“Why allow them to err and then make arrest?

Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, also, a lawyer and rights campaigner, told said that government of a state had the responsibility to make laws for order and good governance.
Adegboruwa, however, advised that there should be a limit to some powers exercised by some government agencies.
“Under Sections 214 to 216 and 235 of the 1999 Constitution, only the police is vested with the right to effect arrest of a citizen.
“The state government must strike a balance between maintenance of law and order and respect for the rights of its citizens.

The lawyer added that arrested persons should be given the opportunity to defend themselves.
“Even the mobile court has its own shortcomings because, there, a lawyer is forced on you, a charge is read to you without the opportunity of making a defence, and within 30 minutes, you are already a convicted person.
“These practices are totally unconstitutional,” he said.
Justice Ugochukwu Ogakwu of the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, said that every citizen was at liberty to enforce his rights.

“She came to court to enforce her rights, and on appeal, I gave judgment in her favour,’’ Ogakwu said

Some activities checked by KAI in Lagos State include street trading, illegal parking, improper refuse disposal, defecation and urination in public places, as well as cooking on roads.
